Christ the Redeemer (in Portuguese, Cristo Redentor) is an Art Deco statue depicting Jesus of Nazareth, located in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, at the summit of Mount Corcovado. The statue stands 38 meters tall, of which 8 meters belong to the pedestal.
The statue, made of reinforced concrete and soapstone and built between 1922 and 1931, is a symbol of the city and of Brazil and represents Christ as the redeemer of humanity. In 2007, it was included among the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. At the foot of the statue there is a plaque placed by the Italian community in 1974 (on the centenary of the birth of Guglielmo Marconi) to commemorate the lighting of the statue's lamps by a radio signal sent from Pisa by the Italian scientist on October 12, 1931.
Christ is depicted with outstretched arms, in a gesture that recalls his crucifixion, but also a welcoming embrace or a universal blessing. The tunic he wears leaves part of his chest uncovered, while he is draped in a baeta poncho, a traditional Brazilian cloak.
