The Cross of the Order of Christ, heraldic symbol of the honor of Our Lord Jesus Christ (pt. Ordem dos Cavaleiros de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo), is the symbol of a chivalric order of the Kingdom of Portugal that traces its heritage from the Order of the Knights Templar, abolished on March 22, 1312 by the papal bull Vox in excelso of Pope Clement V.
The Order of Christ was founded in 1319, with the protection of the Portuguese King Denis, who refused to pursue and persecute the former Templars as had happened in most other sovereign states under the political influence of the Catholic Church.
