At the inauguration of his pontificate, Pope Leo XIV received the pallium and the Fisherman’s Ring. But what are they and what do they represent? The pallium, an ancient episcopal insignia made of lamb’s wool, recalls the Good Shepherd who carries the lost sheep on his shoulders. The ring, which depicts Saint Peter with the keys and the net, is called the “Fisherman’s” in reference to Peter, the apostle fisherman, who—trusting Jesus’ word from the boat—hauled in the nets of the miraculous catch. It has the special meaning of a ring that authenticates the faith and indicates the task entrusted to Peter to strengthen his brothers, a task now also handed on to Pope Leo XIV.
