在古罗马是权力和威信的标志。束棒是一根被多根绑在一起的木棍围绕的斧头。Veniva portato sulla spalla sinistra dai littori (da qui il nome), che precedevano il magistrato.
Divenne poi, nel 1921, il simbolo del PNF (Partito Nazionale Fascista) e, insieme all'espressione 'duce', per indicare Mussolini, rappresentò il richiamo al mito della grandezza di Roma antica.
