In ancient Rome the fasces, of Etruscan origin, was the sign of the power of magistrates. It was made up of birch and elms rods, tied around an axe, symbol of the power to punish. It was brought on the left shoulder by the littors, which preceded the magistrate.
He became, in 1921, the symbol of the Italian PNF (National Fascist Party) and, together with the term 'duce' ('leader'), a title chosen by Mussolini to represent himself, was the reference to the myth of the greatness of ancient Rome.
